Week 1 in Vancouver

Sunday evening, and the end of our first week in Vancouver. It’s been a week largely characterised by work and jetlag, really. Tuesday we flew out here – all went smoothly. Immigration cleared Veronica to do voluntary work while here, so she’s already done her first day working with the ospreys, eagles, and owls. Oh, and the mice.

My working week involves starting work at 7am, catching up with what my team in Edinburgh have been doing, then heading to the office here for 9am. Then lots of meetings, discussions, etc.

This week, by the time I got home, I was running out of energy. It’s not that I’ve been tired, more that my brain stops working. Things like converting dollars to pounds, or taking 5% off 377 become impossible, I just cant do them. It’s been getting better each day, but my body is still a bit out of sync.

We joined the local YMCA gym on the same day we arrived (it was on the way to the supermarket). It’s honestly the nicest gym I’ve seen anywhere – loads of up to date equipment, good classes, etc. And gym toys I’ve never seen before. The membership is less than the Edinburgh Leisure gym at home too.

It’s been nice weather all week – but yesterday it rained hard. Torrential rain – so plans were aborted, and we just wandered around Granville Island, poking in shops and markets.

Today, we’d booked a tour with Deep Cove Kayaking. It was a “suitable for total” beginners kayaking trip to see the local area – no experience required, but we figured we’d be able to see the area, get a feel for it etc. Of course, the downside is that the people you go out with will be total beginners. We did get to explore a bit, but one guy with us was really struggling, and capsized. After a break, he still wasnt doing so well, so our instructor decided we should head back. It felt very odd to be the experienced ones in the group – I ended up helping the instructor tow our capsizee back, Veronica acted as shepherd for the rest.

It is beautiful, though – amazing scenery, and super-calm, flat water. The only real hazard is the wake from power boats.

The most ironic thing about the day? We travelled 5000 miles to go kayaking, and our instructor is a Scotsman.

I chatted with him about the requirements for us to take boats out with just the two of us – and he was quite happy for us to do that, so we’ll be heading back for an explore with just the two of us at the next opportunity.

It’s Thanksgiving here today, but there wasn’t a lot of sign of people making a big deal of it. But it does mean its a public holiday tomorrow. I don’t get the day off though – I’ll be working on my other projects, but it does mean I can sleep in a little later, and work from the apartment.

So, here’s to the start of week 2 in Vancouver. A week with less jetlag, a couple of visits to the Vancouver Film Festival, and a whale watching trip!

Wild Adventures Canadian Style

MeWe have arrived safely in Canada settling in updates to follow. First I wanted to document my first day volunteering

The Road to OWL

Yesterday I had my interview with OWL. Travelling around a city I didn’t know with nothing familiar as references left me slightly nervous. But it was a challenge right? I set out, on train, bus, bus journey across town. Malcolm travelled with me on the first leg waving me off on my adventure.

Nearly There…
As I arrived I was asked to fill in a form and handed over my references. I expected for the short to medium term I would be set menial tasks it couldn’t have been further from the truth!

Information Board
In the office there is a board with all the birds on site. Those in the permanent collection, injured, in intensive care, those that are due to release. Each bird has it’s own section, notes are left for any additional duties needed – extra vitamin, ‘do not enter’ etc.

I was matched with Johanne a girl from Germany who had been volunteering there full time for the past 3 months. We collected our folder for a section and my training began! I hadn’t really thought all of this through. It seems so obvious now. What do birds of prey eat?

Dinner Time!
Dead things of course! More precisely rats, mice, quails, salmon. My stomach turned as I looked into the feeding area and the talk of cutting up rats! I found it amusing the woman was doing the chopping happened to be a vegan, you get use to it she chuckled! It’s all expereince right?

We moved to our section, each bird was checked, notes made on it’s condition, water changed if need be and if all food had been eaten. Red tails, falcons, merlins, never had I seen these birds close up. Magnificent!

Each folder is double checked and signed off before appropriate food is given. Never in my wildest dreams would I think I would be handling dead, rats and mice, mind you I never expected to be so close and interacting with such amazing birds!

I learned very quickly to keep my back to the wall, and never stop giving eye contact, dropping eye contact you are more liable to be attacked. Entering into an American Bald Eagle enclosure I wasn’t going to take any risks. Boy those are big birds. And ospreys, wow! I was use to seeing them through a telescope in the north of Scotland, here they were swooping low over my head scuffing my hair.

Sarah – Office Mascot
Lunch was grabbed as Sarah the office mascot watched over us. A hand reared barn owl who is more comfortably around humans.

The afternoon we tended the mouse house. Rows of cages with live food. It seemed ironic I was handling their dead comrades in the morning, and helping the living be more comfortable in the afternoon. In some ways I found this to be more difficult, they are way too jumpy! And mice babies *shivers*

Barred Owl Ready for release
The day ended well a Barred Owl that had received rehabilitation after an injury was due for release. He was checked over thoroughly and released back into the area he was found.

Last Checks
His weight his monitored and logged

As I stood at the bus stop on the way home, there in the trees sat a bald eagle. I was told to keep an eye on the skyline, as they are often seen around the local area. Incredible!

What a first day!

Vancouver 2010

Exciting travel in a few weeks. On Oct 5th, I’m heading to Vancouver for a 2 month placement there – working through Oct/Nov, then on to Chicago for a conference. Veronica is coming with me and the only thing we have to pay for is the flight from Vancouver to Chicago for her.

Once we’re there, we’re going to see some friends in Chicago.. then head over to Boston on a train to see more friends, then possibly a couple of other stops before heading home in mid-December. Feels like a huge thing, being away from family and friends for so long, but how often in my life will I get the chance to go work in another country for 2 1/2 months and get someone else to pay for it all.

So, there will be mad packing, planning etc for the rest of September! Apologies in advance if I spent most of the time digging through cupboards for that one thing I MUST take with me 🙂
